“An explosion of spice and chocolate and cherries. I almost stepped back in shock. And then, while the zealous Carignan tannins bustle out and fill the mouth, so does this rising billow of wild dried herbs – in fact it tastes exactly like helichrysum! Touch of iron filings and blood on the finish. A lovely example of a varietal Carignan.” Tamlyn Currin

“A more Carignan dominated blend, the 2013 Corbieres Boutenac l’Echappee Belle incorporates 20% Moruvedre and comes from the tiny cru inside the Corbieres appellation, Boutenac. Aged 10 months in tank and then aged a year in bottle, it offers classic Carignan notes of plums, violets, herbes des Provence and spice in a medium to full-bodied, fresh, lively, balanced style. It has the bright acidity common to Carignan, yet also has plenty of fruit and ripe tannin. Drink it over the coming 5-6 years.”

“Earth-roasted plums and bruised raspberries. Rigorously spicy. The tannins feel like fine-ground tea leaves, powdery, astringent, built-in bitterness and fragrance. The wine has an intensely smoky tangy bite, like really beautiful dried chipotle chillis, but it also has a wild damp-jungle earthy florality, something I would smell in my parents’ Kenyan Rift Valley garden in the early morning, a tin mug of strong chai firmly clasped in my hands. Beautiful wine.” Tamlyn Currin

2018
JancisRobinson.com: 16,5/20
“Smells of crushed, leafy garrigue and wild raspberries. Despite an inkiness to the depth of the wine and a sootiness to the tannins, it has a strand of high, clear, pure red fruit that lifts it clear of the grippy bitterness that is marked into the structure but bleeds into the fruit on the finish. Emphatic, earthy Boutenac spice.” Tamlyn Currin

“Graphite, pepper, iron, bay leaf and assorted darker berry fruits all emerge from the glass of the 2015 Corbières-Boutenac Solus, which is 40% each of Carignan and Mourvèdre with the balance Syrah. It’s medium to full-bodied, elegant and nicely textured on the palate, with integrated acidity and fine tannin, and should drink nicely for 4-7 years.”
Guide Bettane et Desseauve: 15/20

“… the 2012 Corbieres Boutenac Solus is a barrel aged blend of 40% Carignan, 30% Syrah and 30% Mourvedre. More similar in style to the Prestige cuvee, with a medium to full-bodied, firm, focused profile, it offers lots of sweet black cherry, peppery herbs, new leather and damp earth to go with integrated acidity, solid mid-palate depth and fine tannin that emerges on the finish. I love the overall balance here, and this is a rock solid effort that will have 7-9 years, possibly more, of overall longevity.”

“Rich and dark, smouldering ripe fruit, powerful build but built-in constraint. Engine revving, handbrake on. There’s a wonderful dried-fenugreek leaf fragrance that fans out across the palate, picking up dried oregano and highlighting the purity, ripeness and curve of the fruit. Tannins covertly stamp their control on the palate. This will deliver pleasure for some time to come.” Tamlyn Currin

“A blend of 30% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, the 2018 Corbières Boutenac Le Trou de l’Ermite spent six months in used barrels prior to being blended and bottled. Scents of roasted meat and mocha add a welcome edge to the aromas of blueberries and raspberries, and while the medium to full-bodied palate isn’t overly rich or concentrated, it finishes long, defined by mouthwatering acidity, soft tannins and lingering espresso notes.”

“The medium to full-bodied 2016 Corbières-Boutenac Prestige is a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Carignan and 30% Syrah, one fourth of which was matured six months in French oak. It’s a bit more herbal and garrigue-laced than many Corbieres, adding additional complexity to the ripe cherry-raspberry flavors. The tannins are supple, turning silky on the finish, so it’s drinkable now and over the next 5-6 years.”

“Farmyardy, sweaty nose. Saucisson and boudin noir, offal and mushrooms, blackcurrants. INtense, with the raw, grunting energy of a rugby scrum, but the fruit is deliciously ripe. Rustic.” Tamlyn Currin

“Woodsy, spicy wild berries dusted in cacao powder. Generous tannins tangled in robust fruit. Lots of Languedoc matière to chew on here, piqued by a peppery finish and a cloud of dry garrigue that lingers.” Tamlyn Currin
Wine Advocate: 90 points
“From a stony, hillside vineyard, the 2018 Corbières Les Gourgoules is a blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 15% Carignan. Both the Syrah and Carignan undergo carbonic maceration. Lifted and red fruited, it offers scents of red raspberries and herbs on the nose, while being medium to full-bodied on the palate. The tannins are soft and ripe, making for a smooth, expansive feel in the mouth, then add just a touch of dustiness to the finish. Certified organic.”

“Like the other wines from this fine estate, it’s aged in concrete vats, which seem to help retain some of the region’s garrigue-like notes. In this medium to full-bodied cuvée, the Syrah stands out for its violet aromas and hints of licorice, while the other varieties seem to fill in around its structural core, adding notes of berries and cola.”

“… this charming cuvée ‘Les Gourgoules’ presents intense aromas of blackberry, plums, cherries, black olives et pepper, underlined by floral hints of spice and mint. A silky attack to the palate, richly fruity. Well-structured, taut and complex, with a lovely long finish. A great organic buy!” Translated from French

2016
Wine Advocate : 91 points
“The 2016 Les Gourgoules is a new cuvée for this stalwart producer of Corbières. The 30% Carignan undergoes carbonic maceration, but the traditional vinification of the 40% Syrah and 30% Grenache balance that element, yielding a wine that’s marked by ripe blueberry fruit and hints of cola and lavender. It’s full-bodied and lush, drinkable now thanks to its silky tannins.”

“A complex nose, intense fruit, with notes of hot stone, spices and cachou. Superb mouthfeel, dense and not overloaded with alcohol, with pure fruit flavours, tight, elegant tanins, and a good fresh length. Very refined, but without the loss of the authentic character of the Corbières. Great value for money!” Translated from French

“A comforting combination of grenache, syrah, mourvèdre and carignan from Corbières in the Languedoc, this punchy red has an abundance of rustic red fruit and will pair well with autumnal stews.”
Wine Advocate : 91 points
“This estate’s “classic” bottling is a blend of 45% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 25% Carignan. The 2017 Corbieres offers hints of garrigue, black cherries and raspberries on the nose, followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that’s more concentrated and layered than the Cochon Volant. It even adds savory components of black olives and roasted meat on the palate, plus a velvety finish. Nicely done!”

“No doubt some wine snobs bash so-called lifestyle brands. But it’s what a flying pig delivers in the glass that matters. The 2019 Corbières Cochon Volant offers bold, effusively fruity notes of raspberries and blackberries, plus hints of garrigue on the nose. It’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, delivering plenty of ripe berry flavors, buttressed by supple tannins and a plush, easygoing mouthfeel and finish. It won’t make old bones in the cellar, but it’s not meant to; drink it over the next 3-4 years.”

“An early-released blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Carignan and 20% Syrah, the 2018 Corbieres Cochon Volant features generous amounts of upfront fruit, including notions of black cherries, raspberries and blueberries. It’s medium-bodied, with some of Cobrières’ stony texture coming through on the palate, which is otherwise smooth and supple, ending on a hint of licorice. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.”

“An intriguing nose – at first, earthy-grainy-savoury-herbal, a bit like a roasted spelt and buckwheat salad with mushrooms and herbs and lemon-olive-oil dressing. Sherbety liveliness tucked into the core, lemon-peel oils and grilled green peaches and tiny golden figs with salty pistachio nuts. This is rather stunning, to be honest. Grows. Over a few days it became more peachy and aromatically ripe, and on the palate, it tasted richer and richer, sitting deeper into the bevelled edges of the oak. Worth decanting and don’t serve too cold.” Tamlyn Currin
